The Riffle — Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 23, 2026
The Riffle is a fly-fishing companion for Northeast trout waters. This policy explains what
information the app handles and why. The short version: the app works fully without an account,
we don't sell or share your data, and we don't run ads or third-party tracking.
Information we handle
- Account (optional): If you choose to create an account, we store your email
address and an encrypted password through our authentication provider (Supabase). An account is
only used to sync your data across devices — the app is fully usable without one.
- Your logbook and trips: The fishing sessions, catches, notes, and photos you
record, and the trips and favorite rivers you save. When signed out, these stay on your device.
When signed in, they sync to your account so you can reach them from another device.
- Push alerts (optional): If you turn on hatch & conditions alerts, we store
your device's push subscription so we can send those notifications. You can turn them off at any
time, which removes the subscription.
Improving recommendations
When a signed-in angler logs an outing, we add an anonymized record of the
outcome to a shared pool — the fly used, the river, the month, a coarse flow band, the sky, and
how the fishing went. This pool carries no identifying information: no name,
email, account id, notes, photos, exact location, or timestamps that could single you out. We use
it only to surface "what's producing here lately" and to gently improve the app's fly suggestions
for everyone. Logging while signed out never contributes to this pool.
Information we do not collect
- We do not track your location. Conditions are based on the river you select, not your device's GPS.
- We do not use advertising, analytics trackers, or third-party marketing cookies.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information.
Third-party services
The app calls these services to function:
- USGS Water Services and the National Weather Service — public river-flow and weather data. No personal data is sent to them.
- Open-Meteo — historical weather climatology for trip planning. No personal data is sent.
- Supabase — stores your account, logbook, trips, and favorites.
- Netlify — hosts the app and sends push notifications.
Your data & deletion
You can sign out at any time to keep data on-device only. To delete your account and the data
associated with it, contact us at the address below and we'll remove it.
Children
The Riffle is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their information.
